「米マイクロソフト幹部、IT市場は大規模データセンタに再編される・・・・」

米マイクロソフトCEOであるスティーブ・バルマー氏によると、今後、ハードウェア企業、ソフトウェア企業、インターネット企業の区別が消滅して行き、IT市場は世界に拡がる大規模データセンタをコントロール可能な少数のIT大企業に再編されるだろうと述べている。同発言とは、FT(Financial Times)紙がバルマー氏にインタビューした際の説明だ。

「a future in which the distinctions between software, hardware and internet companies fall away and a small number of big technology companies, each running a collection of vast datacentres, controls the IT landscape.....」

また、先週、マイクロソフトは今週開催される「Mix08」で同社がリリース予定のサービスやツールについて事前説明を実施した。

CNET News.comによると、マイクロソフト幹部の最終目標は、Virtual Earthや検索、Windows、サーバ製品にまたがる、共通の開発モデルを創ることにあると述べている。

「Microsoft executives have said that the company's overall goal is to create a common development model that spans its online services, such as Virtual Earth and search, and its Windows and server products....」

ここで思い出されるのが、以前、マイクロソフトのビル・ゲイツ氏が社員に送った手紙の内容だ。同氏は、これから「service wave(サービス化の波)」が押し寄せると指摘。そして、「We will build our strategies around Internet services and we will provide a broad set of service APIs and use them in all of our key applications.....」と述べていた。

そして、ゲイツ氏は同社の戦略指揮を二人のCTOに託した、スティーブ・バルマー氏とレイ・オッジ氏である......
