「クラウドコンピューティングの定義について・・・・」(The Meaning of Cloud Computing)

Datamationによると、「クラウドコンピューティング」の定義は、十人十色であるという。以前であるならば、グリッドコンピューティングや、ユーティリティ・コンピューティングなどに関連した技術を適用したサービスと同じであるという人もいるかもしれない。一方、ビジネス面に精通した人たちから見ると、Web 2.0などのソーシャル・コンピューティング技術を適用した新しいネットワーク・サービスであると説明するに違いないからだ。果たして、「クラウドコンピューティングの定義」とは何か・・・とても気になる点である。

"Cloud computing" is misleading. As a marketing buzzword, it's used to suggest that something new and better is going on, when in fact there may be nothing new about it. Yes, new technologies arise all the time. But assimilating new technologies into the "cloud computing" label doesn't make all the old stuff under that umbrella new. It also "clouds" communication between technical people and non-technical people.

記者は、このような "定義が定まらない言葉" そのものを利用していることのリスクを指摘している。そこで早速、Wikipedia(日本語)をアクセスして調べてみた。

*【クラウドコンピューティング】(Wikipedia) : ネットワーク（特にインターネット）という「雲 = クラウド」の向こう側に、サービスを提供するサーバなどがあるが、ユーザーからはもはやサーバの場所も台数も構成も認識できず、単にサービスを受け取っているようなイメージといえる。従来より「コンピュータ・システムのイメージ図」などでは、ネットワークを「雲 = クラウド」で表す場合が多く、それが出典であると言われている

おおよその感じは把握できるけれども、以前の定義との違いを理解することが難しい。そこで、Wikipedia(英語)を調べてみる。

*【Cloud Computing】(Wikipedia): Cloud computing means Internet ('Cloud') based development and use of computer technology ('Computing'). It is a style of computing where IT-related capabilities are provided “as a service”, allowing users to access technology-enabled services "in the cloud" without knowledge of, expertise with, or control over the technology infrastructure that supports them. It is a general concept that incorporates software as a service, Web 2.0 and other recent, well-known technology trends, where the common theme is reliance on the Internet for satisfying the computing needs of the users.

意味は、「基本的には、インターネットを基調としたコンピューティング・サービスを意味している。「サービス(as a service)」という概念が加わり、利用者は知識やスキル、運用管理などが分からなくても、ネットワーク・サービスを利用することができる」である。

つまり、ひとは専門的なIT技術などの知識がなくとも、多様なネットワーク・サービスを利用することができる。このようなサービスを支えるITプラットフォームのことを「クラウドコンピューティング」と呼んでいるという。



ここまで調べてみると、専門家はどのような評価しているのか調べてみたくなるだろう。
続いて、米国調査会社のガートナーのクラウド説明を引用してみる。

*【Cloud Computing】(Gartner Kelly Kavanagh, principal analyst): 「Gartner defines cloud computing as a style of computing where massively scalable IT-related capabilities are provided "as a service" using Internet technologies to multiple external customers. The ability to provide massively scalable processing, storage and bandwidth inherent in cloud computing will require security controls and functions to be delivered to customers in new ways and by new service providers. It also will allow security technologies and techniques that are cost-effective to be used only with cloud-style computing. The massively scalable resources provided through the cloud.」

意味とは、基本的にはWikipedia(英語)と同じであるけれども、次の二点が補足されるだろう。

1. スケーラブルに富んだITケイパビリティ(massively scalable IT-related capabilities)を有したプラットフォームである。

2. セキュリティ制御、および新しい方法でサービス提供する機能を有している(security controls and functions to be delivered to customers in new ways)



つまり、「クラウドコンピューティング」について、ベンダーがサービスとして提供するからには、(1)「拡張性」があり、かつ、(2)「規模が大きく」、さらに(3)「サービス運用管理など(セキュリティほか)」を適用することが大切になってくるものと予想される。果たして、皆さんはクラウドコンピューティングについて、どのようなイメージを持っているのだろうか。われわれを取り巻く「環境」は大きく変化しつつある....
